1 pound ground beef
¼ cup white rice
1 cup onions, chopped
1 small bay leaf
1 cup potatoes, peeled and cubed
¼ teaspoon thyme
1 cup sliced carrots
¼ teaspoon basil
½ cup diced celery
4 teaspoons salt
1 cup shredded cabbage
Dash of pepper
3 1/2 cups canned tomatoes
1 1/2 quarts water
Crumble beef into large kettle and cook slightly. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to boil and boil gently 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low and cook for 1 1/2 hours. Serve with grated cheese . . . (and a loaf of hot home made bread!)
